Hasselt, Antwerp Belgium – November 22, 2017 - FibriCheck, developers of certified medical smartphone applications and Sentiance, experts in using sensor data to contextualize and predict individual real-world behaviors, announce a new collaboration today. The objective is to discover behavioral and contextual cues that influence heart rhythm disorders.
The technology embedded in today’s smartphones can help physicians and consumers capture biometrics with unprecedented ease. FibriCheck makes use of the smartphone camera to measure the pulse rate in the fingertip. Based on this, the application can assess the heart rate of the user and detect potential heart rhythm disorders, which is shared with physicians. This means that users have constant access to a heart rhythm monitor when they are at home, at work or on vacation.
In addition to heart rhythm monitoring, the smartphone and the sensors embedded in smart devices can help us understand how people behave and why they behave the way they do. Using machine learning, Sentiance generates real-time insights that define the profile and the behavior of the user and provides additional context for physicians related to the patient’s circumstances when FibriCheck measurements are taken: i.e. was the user exercising or was she returning from a stressful day at work.
The real potential of the FibriCheck and Sentiance collaboration is the combination of biometrics and behavioral insights. Knowing what happens before, during and after a heart rhythm measurement provides physicians with extremely valuable context. This can uncover specific causes or triggers of cardiac arrhythmia which can help with coaching and prevention in the future.
“Imagine what you could learn from your patients,” says Lars Grieten, CEO of FibriCheck. “To date, there hasn’t been such a unique collaboration where you combine all the powers of the smartphone for the benefit of the health of the user. We have been using FibriCheck with hundreds of patients and have identified peculiar and interesting cases where we could observe that cardiac arrhythmias were triggered by external factors. Together with Sentiance we will explore, individualize and quantify these findings to learn more about heart diseases and in turn work hard to use this information to impact the lives of our end-users”
“We use cutting-edge technology such as sensor fusion and machine learning to interpret real-time and behavioral context and enable new ways to engage and deliver value to users and customers. The collaboration with FibriCheck is a perfect example of how health-related data can be put in a context of the patient’s lifestyle and behavior.” adds Toon Vanparys, CEO of Sentiance. “We are excited to explore this path with FibriCheck and are looking to expand into more healthcare related applications to improve people’s wellbeing.”
